Get To Know: The Black Fortys

Southern witchery without southern drawl.

The Black Fortys may be from the small college town of Carbondale, but these guys are anything but quaint.  This delightful quintet has been all over the US in their short year and a half together, from LA to Austin to New York City.  Touring is a way a life for the band, not just a hope and a prayer.  You may have even heard this band without even realizing it...

I've Got Nothing To Worry About

Peter Bjorn and John meet LA hip-hop.

What happens when Swedish trio Peter Bjorn and John mellow verses are omitted and a more ballin’ (no, no not Jim Jones) approach is inserted? Pure abra cadabra type shit is what. DJ Troublemaker’s remix of “Nothing to Worry About” contains such magic that dreams are made of and the track continues offering a sense of happiness in a time of economic grief...

Chamberlin Smashes Pumpkins

Corgan alone to carry on Smashing Pumpkins' faltering legacy

I used to hold the downfall of The Smashing Pumpkins against drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin.  His heroin-addicted ego fell down the same path as Topper from The Clash and we all know that Billy Corgan can't string together a drum beat to save his ever-more shrill voice.

It looks like Jimmy not only got his addictions under control a few years back, but he's bowing out before things get any worse for Corgan's heinous mutation of a band.  Billy's erroneousness in the music world and his railings FOR the TicketMaster merger have finally driven the last remaining Pumpkin away: Chamberlin has quit The Smashing Pumpkins.

Cheers, Jimmy.  At least one member of the Pumpkins will survive with his pride intact.

Get to Know: Invade Rome

Squealing guitars, classic lyrics, and sexy grooves. If this doesn’t appeal to you, I don’t want to meet you.

There are very few bands that are operating in the true genre of rock and roll.  Sure, there’s a deluge of bands that play indie rock, prog rock, art rock, and whatever new subgenres of rock and roll us critics come up with every day.  But how many bands play that solid rock and roll sound that bands like Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones innovated?  Very few, if you don’t count cover bands...

The Flirt Mixtape

Sometimes music can ease you into it. You know, with your awkward dancing.

Spring is in the air (I’d like to think the nice weather was partially thanks to that mixtape a few weeks ago calling mother nature out), and along with spring comes riding bikes again, ice cream in the sun, wearing sandals, and of course spring lust and love. It seems that when the grass turns green and flowers start to bloom, our libidos bloom as well. I’ll admit, I’ve recently caught myself shamelessly flirting...
