The Flirt Mixtape

Sometimes music can ease you into it. You know, with your awkward dancing.

Spring is in the air (I’d like to think the nice weather was partially thanks to that mixtape a few weeks ago calling mother nature out), and along with spring comes riding bikes again, ice cream in the sun, wearing sandals, and of course spring lust and love. It seems that when the grass turns green and flowers start to bloom, our libidos bloom as well. I’ll admit, I’ve recently caught myself shamelessly flirting. Whether it be the cute smile exchanged with a boy on the train or the adorable guy you briefly spark with and can’t get out of your mind, we’re all guilty of it. Of course I’m coming from the female perspective (clearly I’m not a man, I’ve checked), but you men are just as guilty. This week is a mix of flirty songs that match those moments that put a little spring in your step regardless if they lead to something more.

The Romantics - What I Like About You - I’m pretty sure this song has been in every sugary sweet dating movie made. What’s not to like? It’s upbeat, earnest, and when you add in handclaps in the first 30 seconds, you know The Romantics mean business.

R. Kelly (featuring T.I. & T-Pain) - I’m a Flirt - Flirting is totally acceptable, but take a cue from R. Kelly and make sure the person you are flirting with is not a minor. Otherwise you’re flirting with disaster. And possibly jail time.

The Cardigans - Lovefool - I think I’ve sang this song while thinking about a dozen boys already in life. It’s sweet, innocent, and hopeful all at once.

Bjork - I Miss You - My friend currently has what we call a bus boyfriend, an adorable guy who has the same commute every morning as her. They smile and acknowledge each other, but have never actually met. I’d like to assume this is the soundtrack to their flirtatious relationship.

Broken Social Scene - Pitter Patter Goes My Heart - Broken Social Scene is a safe bet to woo any indie rock girl, and somehow these loveable Canadian’s have a knack for making their music sound just like life. This song matches the beat to my heart when I first see someone that strikes my fancy.

The White Stripes - We’re Going To Be Friends - An innocent ode to friendship between boys and girls. But let’s not fool ourselves into thinking a friendship with the opposite sex is just friendship. I’ve flirted with 95% of my male friends, even the gay ones, and even the ones I would never actually date.

Pete Yorn - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend - Pete Yorn somehow took a bombastic Ramones hit and made it cute. Usually this would be a recipe for disaster, but he pulls it off with a sense of charm that greatly lacks in the original form.

The Coral - Dreaming Of You - We all have those people in life we should not touch with a 10 foot pole regardless of any circumstance, yet we can’t help but find them irresistible. If you haven’t had this yet in life, have no fear, you will. And when that happens, give this song a spin.

Serge Gainsbourg - Requiem Pour Un C… - He could be singing about diaper rash, but Serge Gainsbourg and his native tongue could seduce me any day. The French language is just sexy, and the French are the masters of flirtation.

The Rolling Stones - Let’s Spend The Night Together - A song for those moments when flirting just won’t do and you can’t hold back anymore. The Rolling Stones provide the perfect soundtrack when asking someone “is it all right if I take you home tonight?”
