New Music From A Place To Bury Strangers

A Place To Bury Strangers give us 'Exploding Head.'

Out of the countless crop of bands to garner the Jesus and Mary Chain label in the past ten years, A Place To Bury Strangers has got to be the band that stands head and shoulders above the rest.  Their sound is not so much a rip off, but an ode to the glory of noise pop.  Exploding Head sees this Brooklyn three-piece find a more chilled out groove, trading in constant ear bleeds for more subtle ones.  APTBS have also found a fitting home with signing to Mute Records (Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire).

The eponymous debut blew many a speaker and mind when it took to the scene back in 2007, and now follow-up Exploding Head proves that it truly does help to design your own.  Vocalist and guitarist Oliver Ackerman's talent for guitar pedal creation manifests itself via Death By Audio, a line of boutique guitar pedals that attracts customers like U2, MBV, and Wilco.  Not a bad way to market your band either.

The title track from Exploding Head is a sinister head charge in the vein of Sister Of Mercy and Butthole Surfers.  Do I hear a little Billy Idol phaser effect in there too ala "Rebel Yell?"

Exploding Head is available now via Mute Records.

In 2005, in an Atlanta suburb, Moros Eros came into being...

Girls Are Rad: Alyse Black

It’s not often you find a singer whose been compared to both Kate Bush and Regina Spektor, but Alyse Black kinda does.

The hardcore and serious indie music fan has always had one fundamental flaw: the inability to admit that there’s nothing wrong with pop music. At least as long as said pop music is well written. And Alyse Black is one of those artists who can successfully accomplish this feat. Black embodies the jazz pop tendencies of contemporaries like Norah Jones and Katie Melua but with smokier vocals, more upbeat tempos and just a sheen of bubblegum pink...
