The Cool Kids and Hey Champ Collaborate
The Cool Kids and Hey Champ need to collaborate a lot more. Possibly every day.
It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from The Cool Kids, but we unearthed this little nugget of collaboration. Chicago-based hip-hop duo Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish going toe to toe with Rockford, IL trio Hey Champ on a track entitled “(We Are) Champions.” The track is essentially a remix of “Champion” from The Cool Kids mixtape Gone Fishing. And it is delightful.
The track opens with some light guitar strums and then a mellow dance beat ensues as Chuck spits his verse. Hey Champ and the Kids go back and forth on the chorus/hook. Depending on what musical school you’re coming from, this quick, under three-minute track is nothing short of a gem. We wouldn't mind hearing more collaboration between these two or even Hey Champ and any other hip-hop artists. Hey Champ currently has an EP out and available on iTunes, as well as a free mixtape for download on their blog. If you're curious, give the mixtape a spin.
If you haven’t heard of Hey Champ and are wondering how anything from Rockford, IL could be worth a listen, you should know they aren’t without their street cred. The group was asked by Lupe Fiasco himself to go on tour with him and Lupe’s FNF label produced their first EP Cold Dust Girl. Also, try and keep in mind Cheap Trick started out in a Rockford garage. Look out for Hey Champ as they tour the states.
