New Music From Randy Twigg

Randy Twigg delivers 'Photograph.'

Most of my 1995 was spent pining for some telepathic cross-continental love connection between myself and Justine Frischmann of Elastica. Lofty expectations for a fifteen year old I know, but what else do hip suburban teens have to do when Seattle just never cut it?  Not that Randy Twigg's debut album, Undone, is a throwback to hey days of Britpop, but her style, attitude and filthy grace is seldom touched on these days.

The Toronto/Berlin duo known as Randy Twigg is pure blood and guts electro/rock fun.  It's messy, it's crude - it's everything your parents (and your friends) just might not get or except.  Randy Twigg is the gutter love child of Marianne Faithfull and Stereo Total's Francoise Cactus. That’s never a bad combination.

"Photograph" jumps at you like stocks cars skidding on the rails. Sparks, tires squealing and sudden danger lurk around the corner.

Undone From Randy Twigg is available now via Tigerbeat 6 Records.

We've Got You Covered: Bonnie Prince Billy and 'Puff The Magic Dragon'

Bonnie Prince Billy adds his own flavor to the childhood hit.

You probably had a pretty awful childhood if your favorite childhood song wasn’t “Puff The Magic Dragon.”  Really, there was absolutely nothing wrong with Peter, Paul and Mary’s amazing tale.  The song was actually written Leonard Lipton, one of Peter Yarrow’s (of Peter, Paul and Mary) roommates while they were attending Cornell University.  Lipton used Peter’s typewriter to get the poem out of his head, and left the poem sitting in the typewriter for Peter to discover. The song was turned into a television special, and featured two sequels. Burgess Meredith voiced Puff in all three specials.

None of that info has anything to do with Bonnie Prince Billy, but you can wow your friends at the next party you attend the “Puff The Magic Dragon” becomes a topic of conversation.

Have a listen to “Puff The Magic Dragon” below.

In Remembrance: Conor Oberst's Earlier Works Part One

Following a man who’s been involved with, and deserted so many different bands isn’t an easy job.

Every now and again there will be one musician who, while making substantial music, could never seem to find a lasting voice to present his/her music.  For the next two weeks we’ll be looking at a Conor Oberst, a fitting, if not perfect example of this.  Throughout his life, about half of which he has been an active musician, Conor has been involved with numerous projects and bands...

Paper Route Covers Kid Cudi; launches remix contest

Paper Route covers 'Day N Night,' wants you to remix 'Gutter.'

I have been pumping Kid Cudi's track "Day N Night" since he released the single way back when.  The track has slowly become the stoner anthem of our day (take that any Phish song ever) and has carved a special place in my own heart.  And apparently Paper Route's...

Girls Are Rad: Mil i Maria

Maria del Rocio Herrera Alonso of Mil i Maria traverses language and time.

I’ve always had an obsessive fondness for Spanish and Portuguese–language music, my inability to remember a single lesson from high school Spanish class be damned. And no, it wasn’t Ricky Martin or Enrique Iglesias trilling Spanglish chorus repeats that got my attention; it was the female vocalists with acoustic guitars and a story to tell that did it...
