The Fireship Looks to Revitalize Chicago Music

The Fireship looks to bring a new sound to Chicago on August 16th.

In a warehouse on Chicago’s west side, above The Lawrence Arms and Smoking Popes, lays the practice space for a band whose sound is unlike that of any other band in the city.  The Fireship is comprised of former members of The Attraction, The Honor Recital, White Hot Knife, and Echoromeo.  This quartet comes from a range of musical backgrounds and their unique influences are all present in the music.  This isn’t a band on a mission to sound like anyone else.  They are out to do what few others can successfully achieve, namely fuse the art of making good music with an outstanding live performance.  And from the small sample that HEAVE received, they are very close to attaining that goal.  Within the songs are shades of Muse and progressive acts such as Damiera and The Mars Volta, while rock and punk influences abound as well.  The Chicago music scene is about to get a much needed shot in the arm.  August 16th may very well be a red letter day for music in the city of Chicago, when The Fireship takes the stage at the Beat Kitchen because as drummer Aaron Keefner so succinctly stated: “There is not a single band in this city that sounds like us.”

Arctic Monkeys Release First Single Off 'Humbug'

Arctic Monkeys explore a darker depth with 'Crying Lightening'.

A lot of critics think Arctic Monkeys are one of those bands that many Americans like because the British media over hyped them upon their release to the United States. Regardless of your opinion of Arctic Monkeys, they’ve found commercial success with a sound that isn’t so commercial friendly.  For a while we assumed Arctic Monkeys had disappeared into buzz band oblivion, but alas - they are back with Humbug.

Humbug is set to release on August 25th, and the first single entitled “Crying Lightening” hit the UK radio waves on July 6th. Humbug explores the darkest of depths the band can go while still sounding like Arctic Monkeys. Alex Turner has been quoted by saying that he listened to a lot of Cream and Jimi Hendrix while writing the new album – so we will see how that translates into the rest of the Humbug.  The single is surely catchy – have a listen below.

New Music From The Big Pink

The Big Pink's 'A Brief History Of Love' comes out in September - and you should probably be anticipating its release.

The London duo known as The Big Pink first met at a turn-of-the millennium party, bonding over a drunken discussion of their favorite bands. They no doubt discussed the minimal drone of Suicide, the synthetic charm of the Cocteau Twins and maybe even The Jesus and Mary Chain.  I know it's a bit of a cop-out to compare a band to The JAMC, but the influence of their guitar sound has seemed to eclipse the importance of the band itself these days, and singer/guitarist Robbie Furze does happen to possess that, "I'm drunk, please love me" voice Jim Reid mastered so well.

Taking their name from The Band's debut album, Music From The Big Pink, Cordell and Furze were quickly snatched up earlier this year by seminal British indie label 4AD - a fitting partnership considering the Cocteau Twins are/were fellow label mates.  "Too Young Too Love" is the debut single, and upon first listen could very well be the macho response to "Half Asleep" by School Of Seven Bells.  Further listening reveals more of an ode to The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows," kicked up a bit with a nice tribal electro beat.  Either way, a pleasant little love song.

The Big Pink's debut album, A Brief History Of Love, was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York and will be out in September.
