In Remembrance: The Format

The Format no longer exists - but we remember their catchy, infectious collection.

As many of you may know, fun.’s debut album dropped last week, and if you’re anything like me, you undoubtedly loved it.  And if you didn’t – well screw you.  Writing about fun. and just how much I love them got me thinking about a different band, and arguably the reason fun. exists, The Format...

Dirty Projectors Hit the Road, and Letterman

Hey, if Pitchfork says they're good, it must be true.

The Dirty Projectors are hitting the road again with their latest, Bitte Orca, and they're doing it in style.  With an appearance on the Letterman show on August 31st (that's THIS Monday), the band proves once again that they're one of the most eccentric, accessible, and professionally engaging acts running amok right now.

The album (available now) snagged a massive 9.2 rating from snark-behemoth Pitchfork and, speaking from personal experience, their live show is not to be missed...

New Music From Editors

Editors deliver a different sound with 'Papillon.'

No worries dear readers, Editors have not lost that maudlin edge.  The lovable sorrow, desperation and heartbreak still looms large in the Editors’ world. This Birmingham, UK based group have been enchanting fans with their brand of Dark Wave since 2002, and have always flirted a risky line between grandiose dramatic sap and floor filling stadium classics.  With their latest single "Papillon," Editors retain that delicate balance they've trademark so well.

"Papillion" may not move some long time fans at first.  The dominant synth line seems a bit out of place, perhaps better fitting in some long lost Front 242 b-side.  One of Editors talents though is a keen sense of transition. "Papillon" moves from the cheesed out sound of Scandinavian goth to the majestic heights of the “Neverending Story” soundtrack.  Front man Tom Smith is in hyper Ian Curtis mode, and at times seems to channel his ghost from beyond.  All these elements may be cause for celebration, or the basis for sticking Grandmother's sewing needles in your ear.

New album, "In This Light And On This Evening," will be available stateside early October.
