The Seven Deadly Sins Mixtape

Or the rock opera of the damned.

The music industry is an incredibly sinful and indulgent business - at least compared to the job of an accountant or insurance claims representative. It's no surprise that many songs deal with at least one of the common seven deadly sins. The seven deadly sins were created to educate and forewarn Christians of vices, and to remind us of the tendency for fallen men (that's us mere mortals) to sin. Basically the church wasn't so crazy with the whole sex, drugs and rock n' roll thing...

New Music from School Of Seven Bells

Former Secret Machines member gets dreamy.

It’s always nice to give the ears a break after a long time of distortion and bombast.  It’s also nice to see a modern indie act tap into the dream pop scene of yesteryear.  Former Secret Machines man Ben Curtis has traded in a brother for a set of twins named Claudia and Alejandra Deheza to create School Of Seven Bells.  The trio hit it off while touring with Interpol in 2006, and over time a side project turned into the main project.

Their Debut album Alpinisms might seem like a drastic departure for any long time Machines' fan, but rather it's Curtis continuing his journey of escapism in more of a relaxed way.  Combining the ambient washed out feel of Cocteau Twins with the playful harmonies of Ivy, the Deheza twins create a fantastic sense of heavenly joy with their soothing vocals.  Curtis has given his once explosive guitar tone a more subtle treatment; letting the electronics and the Deheza twins take center stage.

"Half Asleep” is one of the more bliss-ridden songs you will hear this month.  You might even say it was crafted with a poster of framed portrait of Enya hanging on the studio wall. Alpinisms is available in stores now, and be sure to see School Of Seven Bells tour the U.S. all of November with fellow dreamers M83.

Get to Know: The Exotic Aquatic

There is nothing exotic nor aquatic about this band - but they write some catchy tunes.

New Jersey - that magical place of gardens and accents.  It always seems that some irate New Yorker has a thing or two to say about New Jersey.  New York may have the more eclectic music scene, but Jersey is ready to compete with its offspring - native band the Exotic Aquatic.  Front man Jason Soroka is no stranger to the music industry...

The Roundtable

Chinese Democracy is out soon. How excited are you for it?

Wes Soltis – I think the most amazing thing about this all is that Axl has kept the name Chinese Democracy for such a long time.  He went back and forth on just about everything he could on this album, but never lost sight of the name.

GNR, surprisingly to everyone, is in my top five bands of all time.  Their (former) career played out like a movie, with each member being a stereotypical member in a group that is the biggest in the world...

The Quintessential Indietronica Album

Or maybe it’s just Dumb Luck

One of the most annoying things in the world is talking to someone about music who loves to point out that they listen to bands/artists you’ve never heard of and hold it over your head…unless you’re the person that’s being a pretentious douche, in which case it’s awesome...
