The Recession Mixtape

Because, come on, you can get music for free.

Unless you've been hiding under a rock - you know that the U.S. is going through a real economical crisis. Huge amounts of people are being laid off, bills are going unpaid and a large amount of ramen is being added to many daily diets. I know a handful of people that have lost their jobs (mine included) due to major company cutbacks, and it's affected numerous aspects of our lives...

New Music From Bosque Brown

All music sounds bigger in Texas.

You have to admire the pride that Texas natives have for their state.  Anything that comes out of Texas proves to be bigger and better than the rest - from the large portions of food to the music.  The Texas band Bosque Brown, named after a river in Texas, originally started with lead singer Mara Miller and her husband Ryan Miller...

Take A Listen: Ballboy

If it's not Scotish, it's crap.

There's just something about a fine Scottish band.  Whether it be The Jesus and Mary Chain, Belle and Sebastian, or newcomers Glasvegas;  each band could pummel you with a wall of chaos or a wall of kisses.   Continuing the country's fine tradition of high quality/low stress Indie pop is Edinburgh's Ballboy

Formed in 1999,  Ballboy has a sound that is as pleasing and hypnotic as any good sensory depravation tank.   "Songs For Kylie" is from their forth self-released album I Worked On The Ships.  Singer/Songwriter Gordon Mcintyre's vocal delivery is not unlike Lou Reed when he relaxes, and I mean heroin relaxed.  Is there any other? The track meanders on a pleasantly meloncholic path traveled mostly by groups like Mojave 3 or Red House Painters.   One of the bands earliest supporters, BBC presenter John Peel, would be mighty proud of this little twee quartet.  Have a listen, and let us all exhale out a collective sigh for Ballboy.

The Best Albums of 2008

TV on the Radio make a strong showing on our staff lists

It's that time of year again where we reflect on the past twelve months--on the mornings we woke up and didn't know where we had slept the night before, the numerous / nameless sexual partners, and the endless cycle of drug abuse and rehab. Oh, and all those fantastic albums that were released. We gave you a similar list in 2007, but 2008 is the first year where Heave has been around from start to finish...

Queen discovers a Kind of Magic

It’s pretty generally accepted that Freddie Mercury of Queen is one of the best vocalists of all time.  The man’s mastery of his instrument and sheer musical talent are nearly unparalleled.  Over the band’s 21 years with Mercury as their front man, they released 15 albums - 12 of which were certified platinum at least once in either the U.S. or U.K...
