Super Groups Unite!

The Dirty Projectors and David Byrne lend their talent to Dark Was the Night

There’s nothing we like more than a superstar collaboration.  Queen and Bowie.  Aerosmith and Run DMC.  Timbaland and Justin Timberlake (although we hate to admit it).  And now, the Dirty Projectors and David Byrne.  This power duo recorded the song “Knotty Pine” for the upcoming compilation Dark Was the Night which also features contributions from Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, Andrew Bird,Spoon, and many more bands us indie kids go crazy for.  There are a couple of notable team-ups other than the Dirty Projectors and David Byrne, such as Ben Gibbard and Feist and Conor Oberst and Gillian Welch.

Dark Was the Night benefits the Red Hot Organization, an international charity dedicated to spread awareness about HIV and AIDS through pop culture.  Red Hot Organization puts out a benefit album yearly to promote the idea that HIV/AIDS is a preventable disease and knowledge and research are the best weapons to cure it.  Produced by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National (who also appear on the album), Dark Was the Night features thirty-two exclusive tracks.  This two-disc album comes out February 17th on 4AD Records and is also available on vinyl and as a digital download.

For a full line-up of artists who contributed to Dark Was the Night visit the 4AD website - http://www.4ad.com/news/dark-was-the-ni/

The Stars of 2009 Mixtape

Be on the lookout for these artists in 2009.

2009 is already off to a good start musically. With everyone going apeshit over the new Animal Collective release, many new and impressive artists are releasing a slew of catchy gems that are sadly being shoved behind the highly anticipated giants of indie rock...

B.I.G. Returns to a Familiar Glory

The rap slayer, the hooker layer returns in movie form, and we give you a Ratatat remix.

Even if you aren’t all into hip-hop you still have to respect Notorious B.I.G. and the success he had during the relatively short life he led. Yeah we know - hip-hop and HEAVE don’t really mesh at this point in time, but consider this a start.  Let me begin with one of the best MC’s of all time that you already know and heard, the late Biggie Smalls...

Ward Rockets to the top of our Envy (Hit) List

While HeaveMedia's public enemy number 1 these days is definitely Ben Gibbard, M. Ward could be considered a close second.  Not only is he at the top of every twenty-something librarian's wet dream, but he's got the chart-topping She & Him album (with Ben's fiancee, Zooey Deschanel) and is already set to release his newest solo record.

Hold Time is set to release on February 17th and was produced by Mike Mogis.  It features guest appearances by the likes of Lucinda Williams, DeVotchka's Tom Hagerman, and a cover of Buddy Holly's "Rave On."  Right now, you can stream the entire album, track by track, over at NPR.org

Touring with 10's, releasing an amazing album less than a year after the She & Him phenomenon, and receiving praise from the NPR crowd.  M. Ward, you've rocketed to the top of our Envy List.

(The HeaveMedia staff regrets to inform you that our Envy List is also our Hit List.  Watch your multi-instrumentalist back, Mr. Ward...)

Get To Know: The Blacks

Because sometimes chicks rock harder than guys.

The Blacks are the 7-10 split of bands.  Dividing their time between San Francisco and New York City, members Luisa Black, Gavin Black and JDK Blacker came together to create the hard-hitting harmonies that make them such a treat to see.  Luisa Black’s stripped-down guitar coupled with Gavin Black’s full-sounding drums offer the straight rock sound.  JDK Blacker is another story...
