Across The Pond

Belle and Sebastian, The Whitest Boy Alive and Morrissey.

Morrissey has responded, in a most poisoned pen, to the recent NME cover story hinting at his supposed racist beliefs regarding the influx of immigrants into England. Editor Conor McNicholas and writer Tim Jonze were the target of Morrissey's rage in a newly posted response on the Guardian website. Morrissey and manager Merck Mercuriadis have filed suit against the NME citing slander. Here is a portion of the statement...

The editorial treatment given to my present interview with the "new" NME is the latest variation on an old theme, but like a pre-dawn rampage, the effects of the interview have been meticulously considered with obvious intentions. It is true that the magazine is ailing badly in the market place, but Conor doesn't understand how the relentless stream of "cheers mate, got pissed last night, ha ha" interviews that clutter every single issue of the "new" NME are simply not interesting to those of us who have no trouble standing upright. Strangely enough, my own name is the only one featured in the "new" NME that links their present with the NME's distant past, therefore a Morrissey interview is an ideal opportunity with which to play the editorial naughtiness game.

If only Morrissey were given the opportunity to teach high school English classes. You can read the whole statement here.

The makers of Newcastle Brown Ale have asked Maximo Park to design their own beer label. Due to an unexpected demand, the newly branded Maximo Brown Ale will be available across the UK beginning December 15 for a limited time. Front man Paul Smith said, "It would be great for our band to be as synonymous with Newcastle as the mighty Brown Ale, and it's both amusing and an honour to be able to deface the label in this manner!"

Supergrass will be releasing their new single, Diamond Hoo Haw Man via Parlophone Records on January 14th. They'll be returning to the stage Dec. 9 at XFM's Winter Wonderland at London's Brixton Academy. This is their first appearance since bassist Mick Quinn broke his back in an apparent sleepwalking accident. He will be temporarily replaced by Charly Coombes, the brother of Supergrass principles Gaz and Rob Coombes.

Glaswegians Belle and Sebastian will be releasing a calendar showcasing their home town of Glasgow, Scotland. This scenic and sensible piece would make an outstanding stocking stuffer for the classic mope your troupe. Toast To Glasgow 2008 Calendar is available now!

Richard Hawley will be making a rare stateside appearance this Thursday at Abbey Pub. His latest album, Lady's Bridge is a real stunner and sure to please in intimate confines of The Abbey Pub. Welsh psych poppers, Super Furry Animals, will make their triumphant return to the U.S. next year as they play Metro February 16; in support of their latest album Hey, Venus.

This week's Single of The Week goes to Kings of Convenience offshoot The Whitest Boy Alive with their slumbery pop number, "Burning."
