The Dream Mixtape

It's the soundtrack to your dreams, obviously.

You spend approximately six years of your life dreaming. Not the sit in your cubicle and "dream" of a better career and life stuff, but the activity you do at night tucked in amongst blankets with a pillow under your head. Dreams are one of those amazing things that can't fully be explained by science, yet theories abound as to why the brain does what it does when we close our eyes. Freud viewed dreams as unconscious wishes to be interpreted, which could explain why we don't really know the true nature of dreams. No one wants to own up to a lot of what they think in their own head, and dreams do just that. This week a list of songs to go alo ng with a good nights sleep. Sweet Dreams.

Lyrics Born - Bad Dreams - Hip Hop artist Lyrics Born combines an ominous beat over lyrics that really express some of the fears that awaken people at night. The first few lines perfectly sum up that dreadful feeling of waking up terrified in a cold sweat during the night.

Basement Jaxx - Broken Dreams - Basement Jaxx makes some of the best mainstream dance music, and this song conjures up waking up on a beach in Ibiza dreaming about the island boy you may or may not have danced with the night before. Ibiza's dance culture is highly associated with drugs, so you know some vivid dreams are in store if you happen upon this scenario in real life.

Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams - The synth happy song from the 80's that sounds almost scary enough to be a nightmare. But the wise words, "Everybody is looking for something." pretty much sum up the whole reason a lot of scientists think we dream in the first place; to find a meaning to something we've been looking for.

Belle & Sebastian -Dirty Dream Number Two - Who hasn't had a dirty dream or two? Dreams are a great way to explore a fantasy, but proceed with caution if you decide to take those fantasies into the reality realm. Just don't blame us if you wake up tied to a bed in a hotel room with a sock in your mouth, okay?

The Decemberists - Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect - Colin Meloy has always had a knack for writing beautiful imagery. His dreamy music always makes me want to fall in love. I once almost told a boy that I thought he was "painstakingly beautiful" after he played this song for me in high school. Much like dreams, love can be highly embarrassing.

Ezra Furman & The Harpoons -I Dreamed of Moses - Ezra Furman's loudmouth folk rock songwriting perfectly captures one of those ridiculous dreams that make no sense. Moses braiding your hair into cornrows? Sure, why not.

Broken Social Scene - Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day) - A common theme in dreams, music and life in general is the human obsession with love and the baggage that comes along with it. Canadian indie rockers Broken Social Scene fully acknowledge that a lot of heavy stuff goes on in your head while we sleep.

TV on the Radio - Dreams - I'm going out on a limb and saying this song is actually about dreams. I still think it sounds like the perfect soundtrack to some sinister David Lynch type dream where you're p robably in a dark place, someone has a physical malformation and there maybe a little person speaking backwards.

Rufus Wainwright - Waiting for a Dream - I would pay good money for Rufus Wainwright to play piano and sing me to sleep every night. His music constantly involves dreamlike imagery while still tying in personal human emotion, all set to a musical background of lush instrumentation. Wainwright makes modern day Brahms lullab ies for the masses.

Weezer - Only In Dreams - Weezer is starting to become a sure bet for mixtape making. Rivers Cuomo always has a way to put music and words to incredibly awkward and frustrating moments in life. In this case even his dreams are frustrating and doomed, making Rivers a martyr for gawky and awkward nerds across the globe.
