The Driving Mixtape

Everyone sings in the car – and here are some must plays.

Cars are a personal sanctuary from the rest of the world. It's the one place you have total control over the radio and can brazenly listen to the most indulgent tunes while shimmying and singing along. A wingman in the seat next to you, singing the harmony or helping mimic the perfect guitar solo, always helps the ride. So this week I invited my dear friend Carl along to help me come up with a great eclectic driving mix. Carl and I once drove all the way to St...

New Music From The Dandy Warhols

Everyone's favorite blowhards, The Dandy Warhols, have returned with their latest self-released album.

The Dandy Warhols are a band you either love or hate. There doesn't really seem to be a gray area with this Portland group. The double-edged sword of junkie rocumentary Dig! exposed them to a larger audience, but at the same showed the world that Courtney Taylor-Taylor really is the jagoff he seems to be. It's all an act though. The Dandy’s have always been way too over analyzed. Doesn't anyone get the joke? They're just a bunch of self-congratulatory foppish stoners hell bent on rocking out. Marie Antoinette's house band if you will.

ETTDW has all the elements you've come to expect. Whacked out country bangers, slick disco and the signature "best listened to when high" tracks they perfected on 13 Tales From Urban Bohemia. "Talk Radio" is the sure-fire stand out track and a great way too just space out for five minutes. And Love and Rockets, if you're reading this, where's the lawsuit?

Courtney, you'll never be as cool as Kim Deal, but you make great records to throw on in the background at parties.

Get to Know: Ari Herstand

This one is for the ladies, but fellas listen closely.

Minneapolis has been popping up in this column a lot lately, and this week is no exception. Singer-songwriter Ari Herstand has been active in the Minnesota music scene since he left Madison for college in the land of 10,000 lakes. Though he is a modest twenty-three years of age, Herstand already has two releases under his belt, plays the piano and guitar and has toured with the likes of Ben Folds on a consistent basis...

The Cheesiest Covers Ever

Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine.

It's safe to say that lounge music died in the 60s. It would seem that Richard Cheese (real name Mark Jonathan Davis) didn't get the memo. Cheese and his band, Lounge Against the Machine, take songs ranging from metal to pop and hip-hop; turning them into sometimes catchy, sometimes-hilarious lounge tunes. The band is made up of Davis/Cheese, Bobby Ricotta (Noel Melanio) and Frank Feta (Brian Fishler).

Davis comes off as kind of a dick...

The Roundtable

What was your first favorite song?

I remember growing up and listening to Cheap Trick and Tiffany (my mom’s choice workout music). While musical tastes may change throughout your years, I don’t think you’ll ever forget your first favorite song. With that being said, it’s pretty creepy to picture most of the HEAVE staff dressed at Michael Jackson when they were tykes.

Ben Wadington - It depends on how you define "remember" and "like...
