The Week That Was
Wait, so we can watch "New Moon" and keep our indie cred? Umm, BONUS.
Friday: It seems like Thurston Moore is the token Renaissance man for the indie scene. When he’s not busy being with his hot wife and other Sonic Youth-ers, he nonchalantly takes up side projects and then is all “oh yeah, I’ve co-written three books. What of it?” His fourth literary venture comes in the form of Grunge, a photo book by Michael Levine that’ll be out on October 15. Moore writes the text for Levine’s photos, which range in subject from Boss Hog and Nirvana to random kids at shows.
Huh. First of all, there’s a John Lennon biopic coming out soon called Nowhere Boy (based on a book by his half-sister). Since I hate all things good and wonderful in the world, I never get why everyone is so obsessed with Lennon. But that’s neither here nor there—the bigger “huh!” comes from who’s written the score. Drumroll, please.
Goldfrapp? Yup. I think I’m missing something here. Anyway, if you’re in London on October 29 and can attend its premiere at the London Film Festival, let me know how this turns out!
Saturday: I made audible “aww” sounds when this news first came out, so it’s only fair I offer that up once again: awww! Ben Gibbard and Zooey Deschanel got married today! I also like how vague the news bit was—they were married “near Seattle.” Way to keep the mystery alive, kids. It’s the key to a happy marriage, right?
Sunday: I’m betting on seeing at least 3 faux “Imma let you finish” moments during tonight’s Primetime Emmy Awards. Not ashamed at all to admit that much of my Sunday has been spent looking at that ridiculous meme website thing.
Monday: OK, I never thought I would be seriously writing this sentence. Here is the lineup for the highly anticipated, indie-heavy New Moon soundtrack. Honestly, them vamps have gotten some of the best music to fight/make out/not have sex to. A new Thom Yorke track, a Bon Iver/St. Vincent collaboration, Lykke Li, Muse, and Sea Wolf, just to name a few. Finally, I’ll have a culturally acceptable excuse to see this movie AND LOVE IT.
Tuesday: Let the year of the reissue continue! Except this time around, we’ve got Neutral Milk Hotel revisiting In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and On Avery Island on 180-gram vinyl. They don’t come with t-shirts, wall decorations, or bonus tracks, but you know you’re at least going to think very hard about buying them.
Congratulations to Fucked Up—they won the Polaris Music Prize for The Chemistry of Common Life. After seeing Damian Abraham nearly make out with the front couple of rows during Fucked Up’s set at Pitchfork, I’d say they deserve it for their displays of sheer moxie.
Wednesday: In my eyes, there are very few things that Los Campesinos! can do wrong. When Aleks, the band’s keyboardist/vocalist, announced that she was going back to school, I didn’t get too mad—instead, I applauded her for her academic commitment. That’s because I was positive that those little bopsters would bounce back. And look at that—they did! They’ve got themselves a new member: Kim. She’s Gareth’s (lead singer) sister. I think this is going to turn out well.
Thursday: Even though “Get Ur Reuters On” doesn’t sound nearly as good as “Get Ur Freak On,” it’s probably going to be my first platinum rap single. Assuming I can dodge all that copyright/trademark infringement crap. To the headlines!
- “Barbie leaves her dream house to star in movie”: Wow. The guy that produced Jerry Maguire and Julie & Julia is going to be steering the ship on the live-action Barbie movie. No word yet on whether or not Ken will appear as her boyfriend or her gay best friend.
- “Mad Men and 30 Rock win top Emmys, again”: What up, seemingly bitter headline? I feel like I should hear pouting and the stamping of angry writers’ feet right about now.
- “New Jenna Elfman sitcom vaguely amusing”: Reuters writers are gettin’ honest this week. In this case, the entire 4-paragraph article about Elfman’s new sitcom Accidentally On Purpose is totally worth reading, just because they pretty much rip it apart at the end.
