Disappearing Funds

I'm mostly excited to see "Land of the Lost" because I looked a lot like Chaka when I was growing up.

Movies: Land of the Lost

I think this summer is all about ruining franchises that people loved when they were children.  A lackluster Terminator flick, and the inevitable pile of crap that will be the new Transformers film, and this week’s only real option at the theater, Land of the Lost.  In this reimagining, On his latest expedition, Dr. Rick Marshall is sucked into a space-time vortex alongside his research assistant and a redneck survivalist.  In this alternate universe, the trio make friends with a primate named Chaka, their only ally in a world full of dinosaurs and other fantastic creatures.  Land of the Lost is directed by Brad Silberling (10 Items or Less, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events) and stars Will Ferrell (Old School, Step Brothers) and Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies).

DVD/BluRay: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog vs. Defiance

Yes, you probably watched Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog for free online, but the DVD/BluRay release is so incredibly worth buying.  If somehow you don’t know what Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is, where the hell have you been?  It was only the coolest thing to come out of the writer’s strike last year.  The extras on the release actually run longer than the “movie” does.  First, we have "Commentary! The Musical" which is over 40 minutes of all new music where the cast and creators ignore the movie and sing about the writers' strike…and each other.  Then there’s the top ten fan submitted applications for entry into the Evil League of Evil.  Tack on a blooper reel and interviews with members of the Evil League of Evil, and you have a purchase that is well worth your money.  Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is directed by Joss Whedon (Firefly, Dollhouse) and stars Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) and Nathan Fillion (Castle, Firefly).

The other movie you may want to buy this week is Defiance.  The World War II flick is about a group of Jewish refugees who hid in the forests of Belarus for over two years, battling hunger, sickness, the elements, and the Nazis the entire time.  At first, the Bielski brothers meant to hide from the Nazis alone, but eventually became unlikely saviors as they take in refugees .  The DVD extras include a commentary, two featurettes (Return to the Forrest, Children of the Otriad) and cinematic trailers.  Defiance is directed by Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai) and stars Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace), Live Schreiber (The Manchurian Candidate, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Jamie Bell (Flags of Our Fathers, Jumper).
