What People Do For Money
Dead Prez preaches a 'Stimulus Plan' of their own.
In the spirit of Del’s funky stimulus plan last week and the Dow Jones capping the 8,000 point mark for the first time in awhile comes rap duo Dead Prez’s idea to help build up the economy. What is that you may ask? Simply put, do what you got to do to get that green. With that in mind, Dead Prez gives the world the genially titled song, “Stimulus Plan.”
The song samples Pink Floyd’s “Money” and a song from an old school hip-hop group Divine Sounds entitled “What People Do for Money.” Produced by DJ Green Lantern, the beat provided sounds fresh despite both samplings coming from decades ago. The song opens with faux newscaster’s story about housing foreclosures, bailouts of banks, the destruction of the dollar, unemployment rates and so on in a way that only those familiar with Dead Prez recognize as a staple in many of the duo’s tracks. These castings are inserted throughout the song in order to generate thought and inspire action. Dead Prez also weaves statements that express the proliferation of scam artists that emerge in these economic situations, American imperialism and the misallocation of funds within the United States’ armed forces within their message.
The Dead Prez pair consists of M-1 and Stic.Man, who first began working together in Florida in 1990. The duo moved New York City soon after their meeting in Florida and have been preaching their style of political hip-hop ever since.
The track is assumed to be apart of Dead Prez’s next album Pulse of the People: Turn the Radio Off, which supposedly will release June 23rd, 2009. DJ Green Lantern’s Invasion Music Group and Dead Prez’s own label, Boss Up Inc, will release the album.
Listen to the track and ask yourself how far you would go for a little bit of change.
