The Theme Song Mixtape
Everyone has a theme song, and I bet most of you pick 'Danger Zone' by Kenny Loggins.
Bikini Kill - Rebel Girl - Every girl should aspire to be the “Rebel Girl,” the chick who is tough as nails and holds her head up high. It also helps that the Riot Girl movement was based around the idea of female empowerment, so a plethora of songs from this genre suffice for a good female anthem.
The Runaways - Cherry Bomb - Another song geared more towards the ladies, The Runaways were a power group of some of the most fierce women of rock during their time. And even now these ladies are pretty kick ass. Whether it be Joan Jett, who is still rocking out, or Cherrie Currie, who now lives a simple life making sculptures with chainsaws (true story). “Cherry Bomb” symbolizes the bad girl that lives deep inside every girl.
The Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So - This is my default travel anthem. The Hives make fast music that sounds angry, so listening to them while trying to hustle through an airport is ideal. I once tested this theory in the Copenhagen International Airport and suffice to say I got to my gate 45 minutes early.
The Von Bondies - Broken Man - All damaged boys (especially the ones who are in a band variety) should come with this song attached as a soundtrack. It reminds me of the music you’d here in the middle of a bar fight, when bottles are flying and you just dodged a chair someone threw from across the room.
AC/DC - TNT - AC/DC is a bit cheesy, and "TNT" is one of their cheesiest songs ever, but when someone screams that you are “TNT, DYNOMITE,” just try and resist the urge to believe in Bon Scott’s earnest words.
T. Rex - Bang a Gong (Get It On) - Feeling lackluster and you need some mojo to woo the man or woman of your dreams? Turn to glam rock, the most decadent and sexually fueled music of the 70’s. This song will make you want to do bad things to people, and in this case, that isn't a bad thing
David Bowie - The Jean Genie - For some reason I always thought this would be the perfect theme music growing up. I had visions of walking down a dark street in New York, men turning their heads as I passed by. Looking back this may prove that I had vision of being a hooker when I was a child, but hey, everyone needs a theme song. Even hookers.
Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) - If you have an angry single friend that just wants to find a nice man who will marry her, then hand her this track. Soon enough she’ll be learning the dance and requesting it at every bar or club she goes to, making it her personal anthem.
Bjork - It’s Oh So Quiet - I have a quirky friend. She dyes her hair every color of the rainbow, she’ll wear a tutu if she feels like it, she falls in love with love and she’s always up for an adventure, even if that means hopping a plane to France with less than a week notice. I’d like to think this is her theme song, a slightly odd but catchy and lovable track. And just like seeing an old friend you haven’t seen in months, hearing this song again brings back the familiar feeling of why you love a song (or your friends) in the first place.
