The Valentine's Day Mixtape
Because giving a mixtape is about as cliche as flowers.
This weekend is the biggest commercial holiday based on an emotion, hormones and the fear of boyfriends around the world. Yes folks, Valentines Day is upon us. A day of overpriced candy, excess of flowers and, for the single world, just another reason to feel like the third wheel in a group of married or attached friends. Being in love or lust is great, but do you really need a specific date on the calendar to celebrate these feelings? Shouldn't it be everyday? Thankfully we have a split mixtape this week in honor of this supposed holiday. The first five songs are for those folks who have a better half on Valentines Day, while the second half are for those people that are single and not having to deal with any bullshit of a significant other. Whether you love someone, yourself, or no one this weekend - Happy Valentines Day.
Outkast - Happy Valentines Day - Much like the holiday, this song is cheesy, overproduced; yet you just can't help but enjoy it. It's sweet and adorable, and much more fun to give to someone than a card covered in glitter and hearts.
Wilco - I'm The Man Who Loves You - If you are a boy and are trying to tell a girl this V-day how you really feel, just play her this song and let Jeff Tweedy work his magic for you. She'll be putty in your hands.
The Cardigans - Lovefool - Another breezy happy pop gem about falling head over heels in love. Ever notice the songs about love are usually pop hits and you don't see a lot of speed metal songs about falling in love? This sickly sweet song is the perfect track to garner an "aww" from the heart you are currently chasing.
Broken Social Scene - Lover's Spit - Although the title conjures up not the most romantic imagery, the song is slow and soulful and as genuine as it gets in regards to love and sex. Easily one of the best songs to put on if you want to be making out with someone in less than five minutes.
Damien Rice - Me, My Yoke, and I - If you are currently in a relationship of some sorts, odds are you are probably going to be having sex this weekend. This song is all about intimate bodily contact. The song basically is pure sex. One of my friends has made it her goal to have sex to this song multiple times in life, a goal I think many others should consider adopting.
The Isley Brothers - It's Your Thing - I'm a firm believer that if you need to get pumped up in general about life, put on some soul or funk music. This song is a serious manifesto for empowering your own life.
Cyndi Lauper - She Bop - Who needs to complicate an equation when you can take care of yourself? Lauper's ode to self-love is a true testimonial of the fact that you really only need yourself to get by.
Gillette - Boom! I Fucked Your Boyfriend - Crass, immoral, and an anthem that you can only really subscribe to if you are single. Single girls can always sleep with the cheating boyfriends and not be the one technically cheating. Yes it's slutty, but being the other women is something you can only do if you are unattached.
Soft Cell - Tainted Love - The synth and handclap anthem to obsessive and delusional love. These types of emotions can make anyone appreciate being single and not having to put up with this type of crap.
Kate Nash - Merry Happy - Ending a relationship is always tough, but having that moment where you realize you are happy and just fine being alone is truly a great feeling. Love and relationships are wonderful, but sometimes being just a party of one is pretty amazing too.
