The Christmastime Mix Tape
Because you can only listen to corny Christmas music for a month. Well, unless you are weird.
After stuffing ourselves with enough turkey to pass out, watching football (or in my case, The National Dog Show) and running into Best Buy to score a deal on a flat screen television, America is laying rest to Thanksgiving for another year, and welcoming the Christmas season with open arms. Christmas officially starts for me on Thanksgiving when I bust out the new Holiday mix of music to both amuse and annoy my extended family. This mix also goes over well at Holiday parties with large amounts of alcohol, because you haven't really lived until you've jumped on a couch and sang along to Twisted Sister with your group of friends. Let the season of eggnog begin.
Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas is You - Love or hate Mariah Carey and her pop diva ways, but this song is still the best sugarcoated pop Christmas tune of all time. It shows up again on the top iTunes download every Holiday season. Coincidence? I think not.
Run DMC - Christmas in Hollis - Run DMC is more classically awesome than anything around in hip-hop today. And you know what is totally awesome? Doing a hip-hop song with a phat beat about Santa.
Stiff Little Fingers - White Christmas - I'd much rather spend my Christmas moshing to White Christmas at a punk show then eating ham with my extended family.
The Hives and Cyndi Lauper -A Christmas Duel - So the production isn't so great, and Howlin Pelle should stick to yelps and screaming rabid punk tunes, but any song about sleeping with a significant other’s sibling sounds like a fine campy Christmas tune to me.
Twisted Sister - Oh Come All Ye Faithful - Everybody can use a little hair metal during their Christmas season. Feel free to pump your fist along but don't spill your drink.
Johnny Guarnieri - Santa's Secret - A bluesy piano juke joint tune. It could have been worse. Santa could have had an STD.
The Sonics - Santa Claus - This is just a classic pop song that makes everyone want to do the twist around the Christmas tree.
Paul McCartney - Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time - Someone showed Sir Paul a cool effect on his keyboard, and thus a classic Christmas song was born.
Wham! - Last Christmas - Wham! sort of sucks. But this song makes up for it.
John Denver & The Muppets - Twelve Days of Christmas - John Denver is not cool. Muppets are pretty awesome. John Denver and the Muppets is altogether mind blowing.
Sufjan Stevens - Come On! Let's Boogey to the Elf Dance! - Indie rocker Sufjan Stevens is really obsessed with Christmas, and this is by far his catchiest holiday tune.
Death Cab For Cutie - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Ben Gibbard does a lovely retool of this Christmas standard.
Vince Guaraldi - Christmas Time Is Here (Vocal) - It's that song from The Charlie Brown Christmas Special that always makes me misty-eyed.
Jimmy Eat World - 12.23.95 - Hey everyone, it's time for an emo Christmas!
The Walkmen - New Year's Eve - If you find yourself alone at the start of the New Year, give this song a spin to keep your chin up.
