We've Got You Covered

Guillemots cover Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out."

I’d probably call someone a liar if they told me they hated Franz Ferdinand.  I don’t think they are a completely likable band by everyone (like The Beatles), but they have never done anything entirely annoying or unlikable (like Canada). They certainly are talented – enough to win The Mercury Prize in 2004, and played a part in bringing what most people call “indie pop” to the forefront. Their two albums (their third is out in early 2009) garnered critical success with its disco infused rock. Ferdinand’s most popular song, “Take Me Out,” received a ridiculous amount of accolades in 2004/2005 – and eventually was covered by Guillemots.

Guillemots are equally as talented, albeit a tad different.  Nominated for The Mercury Prize in 2006 (and losing to the Arctic Monkeys), Guillemots rose to success in 2005 while opening for Rufus Wainwright. Their two albums both reached the top 20 in the UK.  While Franz Ferdinand gets a little funky with their guitars – Guillemots get a tad strange with typewriters and lightsaber duels on stage.  Guillemots got their first performance on “Top Of The Pops” in June of 2006.  Guillemots guitarist MC Lord Magrao played with his back to the crowd, but had mirrors set up to the crowd could see his reflection and still watch him play.  Strange? Sure.  Rock n’ roll?  I think so.

The original version of the song starts off a tad slow and builds to a bouncy track that is sensible, accessible and fun.  It’s also a song I tore up on the first Guitar Hero. Guillemots take the song and make the intro painfully slow, then put their own vaudevillian like spin on it a little over a minute in.  It’s not as catchy as the original version, but it’s much more fun.
