New Music from Sea Caves
Homespun music from the Pacific, without that fishy smell.
Oregon has never been considered a hub of music. With it’s densely forested area and calm lifestyle; it seems a more ideal setting for a slasher movie than a new movement in music. But Portland has been the breeding ground for many a great band, ranging from the poetic folk of Elliott Smith, the hard-hitting simplicity of Sleater-Kinney, to the elaborate songwriting of The Decemberists. There’s something about this city that inspires great music, and there’s no exception with the city’s latest musical addition Sea Caves. The quartet has been trouncing around the Portland area for about two years now, creating intricate arrangements powered by vivacious songwriting. Though their name may inspire mystery and darkness, their music is extremely mellow and at times uplifting. On their debut EP, due out in November, Sea Caves bring their great ideas about music to fruition.
Their single “Owls” erupts with the complexity of Sea Caves’ style. There is never a moment where the ears are not being pleasured by the multiple layers of sound that signifies the band. The song is in constant motion, always changing and building upon itself. Never has a flute accompaniment sounded so cool since Jethro Tull. Guitarists Shiloh Hasley and Ian Luxton synch their sounds together with a sweet flute part, also played by Hasley, to make “Owls” a never-ending experience.
