Love hurts and love scars, and yes, love is surely a battlefield, but no amount of corny lyricism can help when you truly get your heart broken. You feel numb, like you can't lift your head, can't move and can't fathom how you will ever function in life anymore without that person that you loved so much. I can never find the words to fully express how painful it can be when ending a relationship of any kind, but thankfully that is what music is around for. Below are my top choices for those songs when you really get hurt in the game of love.
Death Cab for Cutie - Tiny Vessels - This song is perfect when you feel the foundation of something starting to crumble and you realize that Ben Gibbard speaks the universal truth of failing relationships when he sings, "You are beautiful, but you don't mean a thing to me."
Fiona Apple - Love Ridden - Fiona Apple has a knack for getting her heart broken and putting into words just how hard breaking up can be. My heart physically aches when she says, "Lonely kisses on the cheek from now on, and in a little while we'll only have to wave." Because you know those words are going to be a real action for you and the former significant other in the near future.
Coldplay - Warning Sign - I don't think I'm the only person that goes through a period of wanting someone you love back. They may hurt you, they may do you wrong, but during some flash of weakness you truly miss them and would do anything to have them back. This song is the perfect companion for that very feeling.
Dashboard Confessional - The Best Deceptions - Somehow my close friends and I can sing along to a huge part of this guys catalog, so I don't think I was the only one really into Dashboard Confessional back in the day. And when he sings, "So kiss me hard, cause this will be the last time that I let you," I can't help but get a bit choked up. Yup, I'm admitting to crying along with a Dashboard Confessional song. I have officially hit rock bottom on any level of cool. This is what getting your heart broken will do to someone.
Wilco - I Am Trying To Break Your Heart - Ever been in a relationship with someone multiple times? Do you continue to hurt each other, but can't get out of each other's lives? Well, this is the song for you. Jeff Tweedy dares to ask the question that too many people in this situation are afraid to admit or say; "What was I thinking when I let you back in?"
