New music from Flight of the Conchords, Sonic Youth and Tokyo Police Club
Sonic Youth – Beat on the Brat (Ramones cover) - On one hand, it's not surprising that a hugely influential New York-based band would cover another hugely influential New York-based band that came before them. On the other hand, the prospect of the perpetually artsy indie pioneers Sonic Youth covering the The Ramones is a little bit out of left field. However, this cover is surprisingly straightforward, with Thurston Moore giving a respectable take on Joey Ramone's vocals, albeit with a little bit snottier delivery. Still, the cover is about as solid as punk covers go, and it's (thankfully) free of the kind of five minute dissonant noise interludes Sonic Youth were prone to during that particular era of the band.

Flight of the Conchords – Business Time - You have probably heard a lot about this New Zealand-based folk-comedy duo lately, and their wry, deadpan sense of humor. With "Business Time," the duo demonstrates their musical chops and lyrical wit by outlining a not-so-sexy attempt at routine lovemakin' with a significant other. The keen irony is matched with an acoustic guitar riff that wouldn't be out of place in an old-school porno, backed with subtle drums, egg shaker, keyboards and bass to complement the beat, which all together form one of the most hilarious songs I've heard to date. Take that, Tenacious D.

Tokyo Police Club – Juno - "Juno" finds the Ontario-based four-piece playing a slightly less upbeat style from their previous sound, yet it's no less compelling this time around. The tune is driven by a pounding backbeat, shimmering guitar lines, bass, and keyboards. While it lacks the intensity of their first EP, A Lesson In Crime, and their notorious upbeat live shows, Tokyo Police Club still have plenty of hooks to keep both fans and casual listeners engaged.
