The Indie Vault
The delightful songs of soundtracks.
Soundtracks have come a long way in the last twenty years or so. Soundtracks used to generally be comprised of composers using instrumental pieces. Today, film scores range from one artist taking care of a majority of the music with some other musician’s tracks sprinkled in for flavor to soundtracks that have a different band on each track. Simon & Garfunkel really started the trend by doing the soundtrack to Mrs. Robinson. Unfortunately, some movies actually take a back seat to the music used within it (I’m looking at you, Garden State). There is another theme held within today’s indie vault. Email greg@heavemedia if you think you know what links the music together for a chance to win some sweet indie rock cds.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Not If I Were The Last Dandy On Earth – Nothing like resident crazy man Anton Newcombe taking a shot at former pals The Dandy Warhols. I know a lot of people who are more familiar with The Dandy Warhols but nobody – and I mean nobody in their right mind thinks that The Dandys are a better band than The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Aside from a little too much tambourine, TBJM is an excellent albeit underrated band. This song was in the Jim Jarmusch directed Broken Flowers. The film received mixed reviews but the soundtrack is solid and I thought it was an entertaining story.
Seu Jorge – Rebel Rebel – Bowie in virtually any form is pretty much amazing, and this is a prime example of why. Featured in the movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, the brazilian musician Seu Jorge takes on a bunch of David Bowie covers and it works marvelously. He also has a small part in the movie as Zissou team member Pele. Wes Anderson is known for cramming in tons of hip indie songs along with timeless classic rock stuff. He also uses ex-Devo composer Mark Mothersbaugh to create the signature Wes Anderson background sounds. You may dislike Anderson, or find him pretentious and/or overrated – but his soundtracks hold their own.
Kevin Shields – City Girl – We’re all still waiting for Kevin to go ahead and release another My Bloody Valentine record but that’s probably never going to happen. Until then we can get our fix from the Lost in Translation soundtrack. Hopefully there is more music that he will release soon. My Bloody Valentine always seems like music I would need to be in a particular mood to listen to, but that never seems to be the case. I’m always down for some MBV (or Kevin Shields as the case may be).
