New music from Weezer, Lily Allen and The Kooks.
Weezer – Pork and Beans - If their new single is any indication, diehard Weezer fans might just get the album that they've been dreaming of for over a decade. With the Pinkerton-style verse, the Blue Album-style chorus, and Rivers Cuomo not-so-subtly singing about trying to write catchy songs and people perceiving him as washed-up, "Pork and Beans" demonstrates the band finally understands what made them so beloved in the first place. Hopefully, this is an indication that Weezer has returned to form - but only time will tell.
Weezer's next self-titled album (The Red Album?) will be out on June 24th on Geffen Records.
Lily Allen – I Don't Know - The first thing Lily Allen fans will notice this time around is the clear change in musical direction from reggae/ska-heavy jams to a more contemporary, "radio-friendly" pop sound. In "I Don't Know," Allen's melancholy vocal delivery contrasts starkly with her blunt, sarcastic lyrics directed towards the growing number of materialistic "celebutantes" in pop culture, like Paris Hilton. Whatever you feel about her new sound, it's hard to deny that Lily Allen can still carry a tune.
Demos from the upcoming Lily Album record can be found on her Myspace page.
The Kooks – Always Where I Need To Be - Lots of young pop rock bands out of Britain seem to be popping up left and right these days (I swear to God that pun was not intended), and The Kooks are no exception. The Brighton, UK-based lads play a fine blend of Libertines-style British rock and unabashed vocal-based power pop. "Always Where I Need To Be" is a straight-forward pop rock song with an infectious refrain of "do-do-doo" repeating throughout the chorus. Undoubtedly, the tune is a perfect example of The Kooks at their best.
Konk is out now on Virgin Records.
