New music from Sun Kil Moon, M83 and Jaime Lidell.
Sun Kil Moon – Moorestown - Forget emo – Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek (formerly the Red House Painters) writes the most desolate, confessional songs of anyone you'll ever hear. Armed with guitars, violins, drums and a brooding, melancholy voice comparable to Jose Gonzalez, Kozelek crafts a melodic, but somber tune filled with longing and regret. While it's not quite on par with Ghosts of the Great Highway, Sun Kil Moon still has a knack for creating a very particular kind of sad, contemplative folk song.
April is out now on Caldo Verde.
M83 – Graveyard Girl - M83 has always been known for its updated take on the shoegaze style of groups like My Bloody Valentine and Ride. But instead of the synthesizer-heavy approach of their earlier work, "Graveyard Girl" finds M83 wearing its influences on its sleeve with a more conventional rock band set-up. Atmospheric, dreamy guitar parts, driving acoustic drums, filtered vocals a la the Psychedelic Furs and a sullen, teenage monologue halfway through the song that wouldn't be out of place in a John Hughes film all combine to make for a nostalgic, one-way trip to the 1980's.
Saturdays=Youth will be out on April 15th on Mute.
Jamie Lidell – Wait For Me - Ever wonder why nobody makes music like the glory days of Motown and Stax Records anymore? Wonder no more. With "Wait For Me," Berlin-based Jamie Lidell not only channels the spirit and feel of 60's soul and R&B music, but makes it sound fresh and alive. Between the honky-tonk piano, swinging beat and background gospel singers, Lidell easily destroys the notion that they don't make songs the way they used to.
Jim will be out on April 28th on Warp.
