New music R.E.M., Black Kids and The Ruby Suns.
R.E.M. – Supernatural Superserious - A band like R.E.M. needs no introduction. But whatever you think about their recent output of music, "Supernatural Superserious" has all the elements of what made them great in the first place. With a distinctly R.E.M-sounding guitar riff leading into a mid-tempo jam, the band plays with a surprising amount of energy that complements – rather than overwhelms – the song. Really, they aren't doing anything new here – they're just doing it well.
Accelerate will be out on April 1st on Warner Bros.
Black Kids – I'm Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (The Twelves remix) - Remixes always vary in how much they resemble the original song. In the case of Brazilian remix duo The Twelves' rendition of blog-hype wunderkinds, Black Kids, they have the best of both worlds. The original, Robert Smith-esque vocals of guitarist Reggie Youngblood, as well as the backing vocals of Ali Youngblood and Dawn Watley, are intact, along with the original song's basic chord progression. However, everything else is completely different. With a catchy breakbeat and synth parts that hearken to the glory days of Thomas Bangalter-style "French Touch" house, as well as 80's synth pop, The Twelves succeed in making a completely overrated song into a dance floor smash you'll keep listening (and dancing) to over and over again.
The I'm Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You single (remix included) will be out on April 7th on Almost Gold.
The Ruby Suns – Tane Mahuta - Judging by the music they make together, The Ruby Suns must be the most laid-back band in the world. In this song, The Auckland, New Zealand-based group combines calypso-style drumming, Hawaiian-style guitar strumming, lush male/female vocal harmonies and hints of other influences ranging from Afro Pop to traditional Aboriginal music. Basically, listening to "Tane Mahuta" is like taking a vacation to that exotic island somewhere in the Pacific that no one you know has ever heard of but is totally worth the trip.
Sea Lion is out now on Sub Pop.
