Takin' You Back
Electronic music for all!
Aphex Twin is pretty mainstream with regards to being from the electronic landscape, yet compared to music in general, Aphex Twin is fairly obscure. I will never understand why there aren’t more well known artists outside of the realm of electronic music, as many electronic bands are completely unknown to conventional rock music fans. Drum ‘n’ Bass, Electronica, Glitch, Jungle and IDM are just a few of the different categories that most of us have heard of, but are unaware of the differences. Well go ahead and venture into the dark abyss of unfamiliar music. Here is a small sampling of some electronic artists to start you off with.
Squarepusher- Theme of Ernest Borgnine - Tom Jenkinson mixes equal parts jazz and experimental drum ‘n’ bass to create one of the largest and most varied catalogs of any of the more popular electronic artists. Many are only familiar with his song Tommib, which appeared in the film Lost in Translation. He wields a fretless bass – that scores you some points in my book. Taken from Squarepusher’s first release Feed Me Weird Things, “Theme of Ernest Borgnine” is a perfect example of the balance of both repetitiveness and chaos to make for a worthwhile song.
Venetian Snares- Happy Morning Condom Factory - Venetian Snares (aka Aaron Funk) has been composing great music suited to send people into sensory overload for the last eight years or so. Not everyone will dig this type of musical madness, but now you can win some points with that strange kid who is always playing around with the Casio keyboard. If you like this, go pick up VSNARES:2370894. It’s an excellent compilation of songs that were not able to fit on some of the earlier albums.
Max Tundra- Gondry - I picked up the 2002 album Mastered by Guy at the Exchange mostly because I thought it had a fantastic cover. This album actually includes vocals on all but one of the tracks (the vocals are kept to a minimum, however). Max Tundra (Ben Jacobs) shows much more of a pop side within his electronic excursions. Although we haven’t heard anything since 2002, I eagerly await the next album released by Max Tundra.
